Community Service Work Study for NPOs
Employers in the non-profit sector are invited to become host sites for subsidized student employment. By accepting a student into a position which serves the public, nonprofit employers have an opportunity to extend staff, and to implement programs or projects not otherwise possible in an economically feasible way. Intangible benefits are primed by the new perspectives and the enthusiasm that students bring to the work site. Employers who involve students in public service activity contribute to the education and professional growth of future human service providers by offering experience not available on campus.
Students must possess a work-study award from the WMU Financial Aid office to interview for available positions and typically work 5-20 hours per week. Employers are reimbursed 75% of gross wages. While students are not always available, inquiries regarding ideas are welcome whenever projects arise. Late Summer II is an ideal time to post opportunities for students returning to campus for the next academic year.

1To become a community service site:

  1. Complete and return work-study agreement and job description form(s) to Career and Student Employment Services by fax or mail.

  2. Career and Student Employment Services will post the job opportunity for students to view in our BroncoJOBS on-line listings.

  3. The student contacts the employer to arrange an interview for the available position. The employer and student will discuss the job duties, semester of work, work hours, etc. The employer is under no obligation to hire students referred for employment.

  4. The employer and student will maintain a weekly time sheet of hours worked by the student.

  5. The employer is initially responsible for 100% of wages. The employer is entitled to a 75% reimbursement from WMU of gross wages earned by the student for each pay period as long as the student has not exceeded the total award amount for that semester. The employer is responsible for any dollar amount over the work-study award for the semester.

  6. Monthly, the employer will complete the Certification of Payment Reimbursement Form. The form is to be submitted to Career and Student Employment Services by mail in order to receive reimbursement from WMU.

  7. Questions regarding paperwork, financial aid awards, work hours, or general program information should be referred to Brenda Case-Parris at (269) 387-2745. Phone Career and Student Employment Services to request an application form or download one here.
